L E N S C R A T C H: FRANCIS CRISAFIO

"FRANCIS CRISAFIO: FILTER PHOTO FESTIVAL BLOW UP WINNER"

SEPTEMBER 25, 2013

This really was intriguing to me, because it reminded me of how I came into doing art. Francis Crisafio titled the series "Holdup in the Hood." It is a series about identity with children drawing and creating faces artistically as subject matter. "Holdup in the Hood is a body of work that documents an after-school arts program called “FACES / a children’s arts collaborative”. I co-authored and teach the collaborative with Meda Rago, to inner city children in the Manchester section of Pittsburgh, PA. The program and my documentation have run successively for 10 years." So, this photography series has not been within a short timespan. I chose this series because it is a source of nostalgia for me. I came into art through an art program, like the kids in the subject matter, and developed the identity I currently have through making art and drawing people's face, specifically. I can relate to Francis very easily, in this respect. Naturally, I find the work very meaningful, but also very aesthetically appealing. I look forward to researching more about Francis Crisafo in the near future.
